Hemoencephalography (HEG) has become an established and physiologically well-founded neurofeedback method in clinical and therapeutic practice. A recent article by Dr. med. Christel Kannegießer-Leitner, published in NOT (issue 6/2025), describes how HEG-based neurofeedback has been successfully integrated into psychomotor holistic therapy for more than a decade.

HEG is a form of neurofeedback based on near-infrared spectroscopy. Red and infrared light are applied to the prefrontal cortex to assess changes in regional blood oxygenation. The method does not measure “concentration” as an abstract concept, but a clearly defined physiological parameter closely linked to cognitive activation. This distinction is crucial for professional and scientific credibility.

In practical application, the measured signals are used to control visual feedback. When oxygen saturation in the prefrontal cortex increases, an animation or film continues. When it decreases, the feedback is interrupted. Over time, users learn to consciously influence their own activation and attention levels.

The article places particular emphasis on so-called HEG compact training. Instead of weekly sessions, several short training units are conducted per day over a limited number of consecutive days. This approach follows neuroplastic learning principles and has proven especially suitable for children and adolescents.

A detailed case example illustrates the long-term development of a child with severe early brain injury and language impairment. The report remains observational and cautious, documenting improvements in language, attention, and behavioral regulation over several years without making causal treatment claims.

For MediTECH, this contribution is highly relevant. It confirms the scientific basis of NIRS-based HEG systems, embeds HEG clearly within therapeutic frameworks, and highlights structured training concepts. Solutions such as HEG-Infiniti, Smart-HEG, and app-based HEG training via the Body & Mind App align precisely with the applications described.

The article reinforces the role of HEG neurofeedback as an accessible, well-integrated method within modern therapy and training concepts. MediTECH. We help people.
